Georgia doctor pleads guilty to Medicare fraud

Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, November 9, 2007

A Georgia doctor faces up to five years in prison, $600,000 in restitution, and $250,000 in fines after he admitted this week in federal court to defrauding Medicare and Medicaid, according to a report in Savannahnow.com.

The doctor, Jesup, GA, physician Randy Scott Lentz, pleaded guilty to conspiring to defraud two government-funded healthcare programs. He now must pay the false claims he received under his provider number.

Lentz and his wife, Rebecca Jill Lentz, billed Medicare and Georgia Medicaid for services not provided using false codes. The US District Court chief, William T. Moore Jr., dismissed the charges against Lentz's wife after Lentz pleaded guilty. The Lentzes originally pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors said the couple, between August 2004 and April 2005, billed the government programs more than $700,000.
