The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded the Indiana University School of Medicine a $2.5 million contract to develop a trial Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN), according to a story in Yahoo's business news.

The funding will allow researchers from the Regenstrief Institute Inc. to continue their work in health information exchange. The Indianapolis group is one of nine selected by HHS to work on the trial.

HHS is funding this work to develop a secure health information exchange designed to follow Americans throughout their lives, addressing President Bush's goal for the majority of Americans to have access to secure electronic health records by 2014.

The nine groups, which will receive a total of $22.5 million, will collaborate on the testing and demonstration of the health information exchange among providers, patients, and other health care stakeholders.
