Healthcare lobbyists fight Washington on Medicare cuts

Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, October 12, 2007

Doctors, physician groups and hospitals are lobbying on the doors of the Democrat-controlled Congress, trying to change Medicare's plan for cuts in doctors' pay, according to a report in CQ Weekly.

The healthcare officials say the cuts - scheduled to go into effect January 2008 - would compromise quality of care. They cited an American Medical Association survey of 9,000 doctors, 60% of whom said they would reduce the number of new Medicare patients they see.

Despite tight budgets, the Senate Finance Committee is reviewing $20 million in Medicare policy changes that would avoid the cut to physicians.

"We will get a Medicare bill with physician payment changes passed this year," says Max Baucus, D-MT, who chairs the committee.
