Q. Can the Important Message from Medicare (IM) be given at the time of an observation registration?
A. The IM must delivered within two days of admission of a patient into inpatient status, not while in observation status or during an ER visit. Delivery of the notice to patients in observation status or during an ER visit would be inappropriate since s/he may never be admitted as an inpatient.
