Romney introduces plan for nationwide universal health coverage

Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, August 31, 2007

Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney recently presented another plan for universal healthcare coverage, but this time it's a national goal, as opposed to just a goal for his own state.

Like his plan for Massachusetts, his plan for the nation's universal healthcare coverage is heralded as a "private-market-based", as opposed to a public, solution to insuring all Americans, according to an August 24 article in the New York Times.

According to Romney, those without health insurance can divided into three groups:

  • One third who are eligible though not enrolled in public programs;
  • One third who are not eligible for public programs but are under income restraints and are need assistance with the costs of insurance; and
  • One third who fall into a middle income range, but choose not to purchase health insurance, according to the New York Times article.
Romney's plan seeks to address each of groups individually to remove barriers to healthcare coverage.
