Record numbers of Americans lack health insurance

Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, August 31, 2007

The number of uninsured Americans rose 5% between 2005 and 2006, resulting in a record 47 million Americans who don't have health insurance according to new data released by the U.S. Census Bureau, according to an August 29 story in the Boston Globe.

In addition, the percentage of uninsured children continues to rise; the Census Bureau reported that the number of uninsured kids reached 8.7 million in 2006, which is 1 million more children than in 2004, according to the article.

One reason for the decrease in the number of insured Americans is because of the cutbacks in employer-sponsored coverage, says the Globe.
