New York healthcare providers to reimburse $7 million for duplicate billing
Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, August 9, 2007
New York healthcare providers Healthfirst PHSP and St. Barnabas Community Health Plan, also known as Partners in Health, owe nearly $7 million to the state for duplicate billing, according to an August 7 New York Times article.
The providers agreed to return the money after an investigation by the state Medicaid inspector general showed that the state's Medicare administrators had mistakenly assigned many Medicaid recipients duplicate identification numbers, which lead to Medicare paying multiple bills per patient. The state Health Department has not yet resolved the issue of duplicated identification numbers though they are working on the problem.
