Medi-Cal funding halted due to budget impasse

Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, August 2, 2007

California healthcare providers face imminent crisis as Medi-Cal, the state's Medicare program, ran out of funding due to the state's recent budget impasse. The missing funds, which are issued weekly to over 11,000 hospitals, nursing homes and other facilities throughout the state, has left many providers struggling to keep their doors open.

According to a August 1 article in the San Francisco Chronicle, Medi-Cal funds ran out last week when the state was only able to issue $143 million out of the scheduled $223 million to healthcare providers, and the state will not be able to issue any of their scheduled funding for this week, previously set to be disbursed August 2, either. Because the state legislators are on summer recess, they cannot approve emergency funding to help circumvent the crisis caused by the month of stalled budget talks.
