Senate committee approves healthcare IT bill
Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, July 6, 2007
The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee passed the Wired for Health Care Quality Act of 2007 (S.1693) on June 27, as lawmakers approved a bill seeking to modernize the U.S. healthcare system through increasing the use of IT systems.
The bipartisan bill, sponsored by Senators Edward Kennedy (D-MA.), Michael Enzi (R-WY), Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT), aims to save both money and lives by reducing errors and duplicated paperwork, and providing instant access to medical records for physicians and other healthcare providers.
The bill funds those entities who demonstrate financial need by providing grants and loans to providers who want to purchase IT systems.
The federal government believes the adoption of IT systems by all healthcare providers could save $140 billion annually.
