More hospitals aggressively pursuing payments

Hospitals aren't denying critical care, but many are becoming stingier about collecting co-pays and declining to perform elective procedures on patients who are unable to pay, reports The Tennessean.
It marks a new era when patient access is proactively addressing the volume of unpaid medical bills.

The story focused on one patient who was given three days to pay a $75 co-pay or have his debt turned over to a collector, reports The Tennessean.
In the past, providers allowed weeks and months for a patient to submit payments following the service. Now, the landscape has changed.
Providers are starting to invest in technology that screens the insured and uninsured, and estimates their ability to pay. Based on that information, providers are asking more patients to pay what they owe up front.
