Study: Many of country's uninsured population are veterans

Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, June 22, 2007

Of the 45 million uninsured Americans, 1.8 million are U.S. veterans younger than age 65, according to a new study conducted by the Harvard Medical School.

Many of these men and women lack even basic health insurance of access to healthcare, the study reports.

"The data is showing that many veterans have no coverage and they're sick and need care and can't get it," Stephanie J. Woolhandler, a Harvard Medical School professor, told the House Committee on Veterans Affairs (VA) on Wednesday.

Woolhandler received her data from two surveys: the Current Population Survey from the Census Bureau and the National Health Interview Survey from the Department of Health and Human Services.

"It breaks my heart," Woolhandler said. "The VA should be an important safety net for my patients, and it's not."
