Be careful how you present your charity care guidelines to patients

The manner in which you present the charity option is very important.

Many individuals may be too proud to accept "charity." However, if you use the term "financial assistance," they may be more willing to cooperate.

To explain the income guidelines, you might say to a patient: "Our hospital looks at your income to see if you qualify for assistance. We use guidelines based on income and number of people in your immediate family. These guidelines are developed by the federal government and updated each year. This is one way we make sure that everyone is treated fairly and consistently."
