Anthem Blue Cross in Indiana offers price shopping tool for members
Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, May 4, 2007
Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield recently unveiled an Internet tool that will allow members to price shop for procedures online, reports the Indianapolis Star.
The insurer, which is part of Indianapolis-based WellPoint, said this week that consumers will be able to search through dozens of procedures performed at hospitals across Central Indiana.
Anthem has 1.8 million members in Indiana. Officials say they want to help customers understand the cost of care they receive for common services.
Initially, the tool will offer costs information for 38 procedures and services. The costs include related expenses as well, such as lab work, anesthesia, and recovery room charges, reports the Star.
Clarian Health introduced its own site this month, which also included estimated out-of-pocket expenses. UnitedHealth is another large insurer which offers its members tools to estimate costs.
