UnitedHealth: No more long waits for claims decisions

Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, April 12, 2007

There will be no more waiting days or weeks for a decision on a claim if you're working with the nation's largest health insurer, reports the Hartford Courant.

UnitedHealth Group, Inc. says it can now notify providers and patients within 10 seconds whether it will cover a medical treatment.

Providers can submit claims through the company's Web site during the patient's visit to receive a quick answer. This process will cut costs on both the provider's and insurer's end, says UnitedHealth.

However, the insurer says it won't speed up reimbursement-just the decision.

Insurance companies spend between 13% and 16% of premiums on paperwork, says Paul Mango, a director with McKinsey & Co., a management consulting group.
