NC collaborative to coordinate better care for uninsured population

Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, March 29, 2007

Health leaders in Wake County (NC) have set out to unclog area ERs and alleviate the strain on providers in an area strained by the uninsured population, reports the Raleigh News & Observer.

The CapitalCare Collaborative, which includes eight clinics, health systems, and county agencies, will connect patients with nonprofit organizations that can direct patients to care that is more cost-effective than ERs.

The program will also organize uninsured patients' financial data in an online database which, the Collaborative hopes, will help coordinate care better.

The group estimates that 20% of Wake County residents, ages 18-64, are uninsured. Half live in poverty, according to the group.

The average emergency room visit costs about $1,000, while an area clinic appointment usually costs less than $100, the Collaborative says.
