New program helps emergency responders identify hospital destinations quicker

Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, March 16, 2007

Emergency workers now can quickly and easily track patient capacity at Rhode Island hospitals through a new Web-based program, reports the Boston Globe.

The program enables emergency responders to divert to a different hospital if one hospital does not have available beds. The system should help determine the best place to take patients in an emergency, avoiding potential delays.

Rhode Island health officials have placed the system in every state ER and command center.

The system connects to regional emergency dispatch centers. Instead of calling around to different hospitals to check on bed availability, the system allows emergency responders to quickly access the information via the computer.

The Department of Homeland Security funded the $200,000 program.
