TN hospital takes proactive approach to make up for reimbursement losses

Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, March 8, 2007

A Tennessee hospital is taking a unique approach to offset losses from payer reimbursement and caring for the uninsured, reports the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

Erlanger Hospital has appointed five new service line managers to convince regional hospitals and physicians to refer patients needing specialized care to Erlanger. The plan is to boost the hospital's customer base to make up for inconsistencies in the reimbursement process.

"We went out and got the best talkers we could get," Roger Forgey, senior vice president for business development, told physicians and hospital trustees at a recent meeting, according to the Tennessean.

The job requirement is to market Erlanger's outpatient facilities and encourage physician referrals. Erlanger believes this approach is necessary to attract more patients in a time when the bottom line isn't as strong as it could be.
