Bush campaigns in Ohio for health savings plans

Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, February 17, 2006

President Bush traveled to the headquarters of the Wendy's fast-food chain in Dublin, OH on Wednesday to campaign for the expansion of health savings accounts as a tool for not only the wealthy, but for the 45 million uninsured Americans, the New York Times reports.

Bush's plan is to make these accounts, which allow consumers to carry over tax-free funds from year to year, more attractive to the middle and lower classes by expanding their tax incentives and the amount of money each person can contribute each year.

"You see, it's like car insurance," said Bush. "If you change your jobs, you can take your car insurance with you."

Bush's opposition argue that this plan on creates more problems for the healthcare industry, as a fast-food cook making $15,000 a year cannot afford to contribute $5,000 of his or her salary to a health savings account or pay the $1,050 yearly deductible in medical expenses as denoted in the health plan's contract.
