Bush signs measure to trim Medicare, Medicaid over next five years
Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, February 10, 2006
President Bush signed a measure this week aimed at cutting Medicaid and Medicare spending significantly over the next five years, reports the Associated Press.
Bush's proposal, which would take place when the next budget year begins on October 1, asks Congress to trim Medicare spending by $35.9 billion over five years. The cuts are relatively small, compared with deficits expected to total $1.3 trillion or more through 2010.
Democrats attacked the measure, claiming it hurts college students, the elderly, and the disabled, who rely on Medicaid to pay for their healthcare.
