HHS: 21 million Part D enrollees, and counting

Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, February 16, 2005

The new Medicare Part D drug program, which begins on January 1, will enroll more than 21 million elderly and disabled people, according to new figures from the Department of Health and Human Services.

The majority of the 21 million enrollees, as of December 13, are retirees with Medicare-supplemented private coverage, Medicare Advantage programs, military programs, and other arrangements that will transfer them to the new coverage, Reuters reports.

Enrollment began on November 15. Originally, skeptics were unsure how many of the 42 million Medicare enrollees would join.
