CMS proposes Medicare coverage for bariatric surgery
Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, December 2, 2005
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced its plan to change Medicare coverage for bariatric surgery to help reduce the health risks associated with obesity.
For Medicare beneficiaries under 65, CMS proposes national coverage for open and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding under certain medical circumstances. This is contingent upon whether the operating facility meets evidence-based standards for bariatric surgery.
CMS proposes to eliminate seniors aged 65 and over from this plan in light of surgical risks.
