Medicare bonus payment program improving quality of care

Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, November 18, 2005

Federal health officials say a pay-for-performance Medicare bonus payment system is resulting in significantly improved quality of care, The New York Times reports.

The three-year-old program, which included 270 hospitals, awarded the top 123 performers an additional $8.85 million.

The results suggest that incentives do improve quality of care.

One example of the program's success involved facilities' willingness to give heart attack patients more aspirin at the time of admission. This alone, according to Medicare officials saved the lives of 235 heart attack victims.
