The Senate last week voted to approve the fiscal year 2006 Senate budget reconciliation bill, which included about $11 billion in Medicare and Medicaid spending reductions in 2006 and $35 billion over five years, the New York Times reports.

Democrats are criticizing President Bush for neglecting the poor and the elderly. However, the president lauded the legislation as a major step in cutting the deficit.

The Senate passed the legislation, 52-47.
