Blue Cross of Michigan bestows grant on 20 free clinics
Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, May 13, 2005
Twenty free health clinics that serve residents in 33 counties in the state will receive grants from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network to help provide care to the uninsured. Nearly 300,000 uninsured residents live in the clinics' service areas.
"The grant program aims to help free clinics reach out to serve the uninsured where it benefits the most, at the local level," said Blue Cross President and CEO Richard E. Whitmer, in a press release.
The grants total $677,160 and range from $17,000 to $50,000. They are part of a $1 million grant program by the insurer that will provide funds to 30 free clinics this year, according to the release.
Ten free clinics in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties received additional funding April 27.
Seitz said the problem of the uninsured affects everyone, including those with health insurance.
"Early intervention is the key to prompt detection of illnesses so those in need can get help and learn how to stay healthier. Instead of the uninsured being treated in emergency rooms, these health clinics provide access to earlier and often less costly treatment. This can help hold down healthcare costs for everyone," Seitz said.
