Internet billing option yields positive results
Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, August 6, 2004
Internet billing and payment options can seem daunting, but the results can be worth the effort, according to Mary Mirabelli, vice president of HCA's financial services group, who spoke during HFMA's annual conference in late June in Nashville.
Consider this: Whether by credit card or ACH (electronic checks), online payments can accelerate the availability of funds, improve the certainty of collection, and avoid the costs of returned-check processing.
In addition, patients like the option of accessing billing information whenever they want, Mirabelli said.
Here are some questions to ask to get started:
Since HCA instituted online billing throughout its system (it has 10 patient account service centers serving 180 hospitals), the number of phone calls with questions has decreased. Mirabelli said overall collection costs have decreased as well.
Across the HCA system, money collected online has increased since it adopted the model. And, Mirabelli noted, patient satisfaction for those using the system is high.
