Q: Does your facility preregister newborns? What process do you have in place to handle this?
Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, June 25, 2004
A: We do not preregister newborns, but we do have a quick registration process that our delivery nurses use. The mother's record is used for all demos and the nurse just fills in a few fields such as time of birth, physician, and sex. Then the registration is complete and the baby has a unique medical record number.
Our biggest problem in instituting this was ensuring the nurses picked the correct mother from the census screen. Education and training are key. This process not only sped up the registration, but also eliminated all the calls to admissions to do the registration-we have more than 4,500 deliveries a year so it was well worth the effort.
This question was answered by Joyce Sourbeck MS, RN, director of patient accounts/patient registration at Abington (PA) Memorial Hospital.
