Scenario: CAH staffing requirements
Medicare Update for CAHs, July 11, 2012
Dr. Anderson is a physician that covers the emergency department of a critical access hospital Monday through Friday and lives 20 minutes away. Due to the variance in the volume of patients throughout the week, Dr. Anderson is not on-site and is called in on an as-need basis, but he is available 24 hours a day by telephone. In this scenario, does the CAH meeting the staffing requirements for physicians?
Yes. As long as Dr. Anderson can be reached at all times by telephone or radio, and is on-site within 30 minutes of being contacted, the hospital has met the conditions of participation. <CMS State Operations Manual: Appendix W; §485.618>
