CMS revises the Interpretive Guidelines for hospitals and CAHs
CMS revises sections of the Interpretive Guidelines for hospitals and critical access hospitals (CAH) containing information about anesthesia services.
Effective Date: December 2, 2011

On November 28, CMS published the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule final rule in the Federal Register. The final rule includes information about the five-year review of work relative value units, the clinical laboratory fee schedule signature requirements, and other revisions to Medicare Part B for 2012.
CMS posts press release about coverage for screening and counseling for obesity
On November 29, CMS posted a press release announcing that Medicare will add screening and counseling services to reduce obesity to its listed of covered preventive services.
CMS will cover alcohol screening and counseling services for Medicare beneficiaries
On November 23, CMS published a transmittal that states Medicare will cover annual alcohol screening for Medicare beneficiaries, including pregnant women. For those who screen positive, CMS will cover up to four, brief, face-to-face behavioral counseling interventions annually.
Effective Date: October 14, 2011
Implementation Date: December 27, for non-systems changes April 2, 2012 for shared system changes, July 2, 2012, for CWF provider screens, HICR changes, and MCS MCSDT changes
CMS will cover screening for depression in adults
On November 23, CMS published a transmittal that states contractors shall cover annual screening for adults for depression in the primary care setting that have staff-assisted depression care supports in place to assure accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and follow-up.
Implementation Date: December 27, 2011 for non-shared system edits, April 2, 2012 for shared systems edits; July 2, 2012, for CWF provider screens, HICR changes, and MCS MCSDT changes
CMS will cover behavioral therapy for cardiovascular disease on or after November 8
On November 23, CMS released a transmittal that states it will cover intensive behavioral therapy for cardiovascular disease, inclusive of one face-to-face risk reduction visit annually for dates of service on and after November 8.
Effective Date: November 8, 2011
Implementation Date: December 27, 2011 for non-shared system edits, April 2, 2012 for shared system edits, July 2, 2012, for CWF provider screens, HICR changes and MCS MCDST Changes

CMS clarifies ESRD revisions
On November 25, CMS rescinded Transmittal 2335, dated October 28, and replaced it with Transmittal 2361 in order to correct the description of the Kt/V reporting in publication 100-4, chapter 8 Section 50.9.
Effective Date: January 1, 2012 and April 1, 2012 as indicated in Section I. B. Policy
Implementation Date: April 2, 2012
