If there is a variance in the volume of patients being treated in the emergency department, a critical access hospital can have a physician or non-physician practitioner (NPP) trained in that specialty cover the department from an offsite location, to be called in as needed. As long as the physician or NPP can be reached at all times by telephone or radio and is onsite within 30 minutes of being contacted, the hospital has met the conditions of participation. For frontier areas, the time expands to 60 minutes. State Operations Manual Appendix W; §485.618>
