On March 9, CMS released a special edition MLN Matters article that highlights the importance of correctly coding the place of service by physicians and their billing agents. Using nonfacility place of service codes for services that are actually performed in outpatient departments or ambulatory surgical centers often results in overpayments, according to the article. Medicare does recover these overpayments, placing the onus on provider-based entities to correctly code the place of service.
