GAO examines RAC vulnerabilities

According to a new Government Accountability Office (GAO) report, CMS has failed to take appropriate steps to prevent improper payments in the Medicare program. When the permanent RAC program was implemented, the GAO was asked to examine specific issues that arose during the demonstration, and CMS’s efforts to address them during the permanent program. This GAO report examines the extent of CMS process to address vulnerabilities, coordination with Medicare claims administration contractors, and the methods used to oversee RAC claim review accuracy and provider service during the national program.
