The number of patients satisfied with their inpatient care has steadily risen in each of the last five years, according to the 2009 Hospital Pulse Report: Patient Perspectives on American Health Care.

The report analyzes data collected from nearly three million patients at 2,000 U.S. hospitals in 2008. Eighty-five percent of respondents said they were satisfied with their inpatient care.

The following are the top five states rated highest by respondents:
  • Maine
  • South Carolina
  • New Hampshire
  • Wisconsin
  • Montana
Respondents also ranked their priorities for inpatient healthcare providers:
  1. Response to concerns and complaints made during their stay
  2. Degree to which hospital staff addressed their emotional needs
  3. Staff effort to include them in decisions about your treatment
  4. How well the nurses kept them informed
  5. Promptness in responding to the call button
