For thousands of hospitals, the familiar ritual of trimming supply costs has become far more than simply meeting budget expectations. In a down economy in which many hospitals find themselves on fiscal life support, cost-cutting means saving jobs or unearthing the funds needed to remodel aging structures or bring in new technology to improve patient care.
