During the past several years, many hospitals have made significant progress in containing the cost of total hip and knee implants.
Data from a sample of organizations surveyed by con¬sultants Sg2 in 2008 indicate the average price paid for a total hip implant, excluding revisions, partial hips, and hip resurfacing, was $5,405. The average price paid for a total knee implant excluding revisions was somewhat less, at $4,455. Both figures are significantly below list prices, with discounts ranging as high as 40%–60%.
