As the nation weighs the cost and potential benefit of widespread adoption of electronic medical records and the $19 billion earmarked for it through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, a much smaller healthcare provision buried inside the same measure has received far less attention and public scrutiny.
But for millions of American patients and the 5,700 U.S. hospitals that serve them, the provision fund¬ing coordinated research into comparing medical treat¬ments for specific illnesses and conditions could have consequences nearly as far-reaching as computerized recordkeeping.
