This story is a familiar one to materials managers in every hospital: A vendor approaches someone in the purchasing department with a new product or service. After preliminary talks, the vendor goes to the end users to detail the offering. Afterward, the vendor may return to the purchasing department, where a product evaluation process begins with a standardization or value analysis committee.
Ultimately, this question comes up: What’s the cost (or price)? Regardless of whether the person asking the question uses the word “cost” or “price” it is likely that the intended meaning relates more to the latter rather than the former.
