Hospitals push back against declining revenue

Hospitals are in trouble. By virtually every financial measure available, U.S. hospitals are struggling against money woes that are, in many cases, unprecedented. This is saying a lot, since the vast majority of the na¬tion’s 5,000-plus hospitals have labored for years under the constraints of thin, if not invisible, black lines drawn atop red ink.
For hospitals, surgical volumes have dropped while emergency room visits and charity care have surged, leaving hospital budgets in tatters. Suppliers are also feeling the pinch.
