For hospitals, a bitter pill to swallow

The failure of major pharmaceutical manufacturers to provide timely notification of price changes is forcing hospitals to rewrite purchase orders and other documents, wasting millions of dollars in excess paperwork and labor costs, say contracting executives.

In most cases, hospitals and GPOs—which contract billions of dollars in sales for branded drugs—receive announcements of price changes by e-mail or by letters sent through the U.S. Postal Service days or even weeks after price changes, usually increases, are put into effect.
