In December 1996, a consortium of links in the medical supply chain released a study showing that the healthcare industry could save as much as $11 billion in annual supply chain costs by increasing efficiencies at manufacturing, distribution, and provider organizations.

The study, Efficient Healthcare Consumer Response (EHCR), based on a similar study of the grocery industry, blasted the nascent electronic medical suppliers into a wild orbit later to be known as e-commerce.
