Census bureau reports greater numbers of insured Americans

The number of people without health insurance fell in 2007, largely because of increased health coverage for children, the U.S. Census Bureau said Tuesday.
The Los Angeles Times reports that, according to the census bureau’s annual report on income, poverty and health insurance, the number of people without health insurance dropped from 47 million in 2006 to 45.7 million last year.

The census reports that in 2007, 83 million people were covered by government insurance programs, up from 80.3 million in 2006. The number of children with government insurance rose by almost 1 million to 23 million, and the number of people on Medicaid increased from 38.3 million to 39.6 million.
