Survey shows rising popularity of consumer-driven insurance plans
Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, August 22, 2008
United Benefit Advisors Inc., an employee benefit advisory company, released survey results showing that consumer-driven health insurance plans are growing in popularity, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reports.
The survey, which looked at 18,019 health plans covering about 4.4 million people, revealed that the number of consumer-driven health plans increased by 43% in 2007, and now account for almost 13% of all employer-offered health plans, UBA reported in a news release.
Consumer-driven health plans typically have a type of health savings account that employers contribute to, and usually have higher deductibles but lower out-of-pockets costs and premiums than do other plans.
Many employers are relying on wellness programs to help keep costs down, UBA said as reported by the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Nearly 10% of employers surveyed offer a wellness program, up from 7.4% one year ago.
