Report refutes Medicare claim of reduced fraud

In 2006, Medicare officials stated that they had reduced the number of fraudulent and improper claims paid by the agency, the New York Times reports.
 
But a confidential draft of a federal inspector general’s report shows that those claims were not accurate.
 
According to the inspector general’s report, Medicare officials told outside auditors that when calculating the agency’s rate of improper payments, they should ignore government policies that would have correctly measured fraud.
