Concierge healthcare rising in popularity

In a growing trend, primary care physicians are turning to concierge medicine, the Austin Business Journal reports.

In a concierge model, patients pay an upfront, annual fee for around-the-clock physician-access by phone, an emphasis on preventative care, and thorough visits and exams. Doctors participating in this model do not usually accept insurance; there are, however, some who have private contracts to take Medicare patients.

Although the number of concierge doctors is still very small compared to the number of doctors in traditional practice, the 10% cut in Medicare reimbursement may cause that number to rise.
