York (ME) Hospital finds bedside registration in the ED one of the most effective tools to ensure an accurate and compliant patient claim. They use the following seven-part process leading to registration in the ED:
1. A patient presents in the ED.
2. A concierge greets the patient.
3. An RN performs an initial quick assessment.
4. If the patient is in urgent need of medical attention, he or she is immediately escorted to a treatment room. If not, he or she waits in the ED for triage.
5. A registrar in the ED lobby collects basic information.
6. After triage, which is on a first-come, first-serve basis, the patient is taken to a treatment room for bedside registration. The goal, Finnemore says, is to have patients triaged within 7–10 minutes of presenting.
7. If the case is critical, registrars go to the room and attempt to get any information from family members to confirm the patient’s identification.
