The Bush administration said on Monday it is freezing a 10% fee cut for doctors who treat Medicare patients, the Associated Press reports.
The move allows Congress time to stop the cuts, which were scheduled because of a formula that requires cuts when spending surpasses established goals, when lawmakers return from a July 4 recess.
In order to avoid irate Medicare beneficiaries at the polls this fall, Congress will likely act quickly the week of July 7 to stop the payment cuts for about 600,000 doctors who treat Medicare patients.
