More than 250,000 additional US public health workers will be needed by the year 2020, the Association of Schools of Public Health reported last week.

The association predicts a shortage of public health physicians, nurses, epidemiologists, health care educators, and administrators. In addition, 23 percent of the healthcare workforce is anticipated to become eligible for retirement during the next four years, the Orlando Business Journal reports.

The group is asking for a federal investment increase in public health education and training.
