Medicare expands coverage of ailing hearts

Medicare is proposing two changes in coverage for people with heart problems, the Wall Street Journal reports.

One would cover artificial hearts; the other would expand coverage of home monitoring of the effects of the blood thinner warfarin.

In 1986, Medicare denied coverage of artificial hearts, claiming the safety and effectiveness evidence was insufficient.

Since then, two artificial heart companies have run clinical trials on safety and health, and CMS says it now believes there is "sufficient scientific evidence" to cover the devices, as long as they are used as part of FDA-approved clinical trials, according to the report in the Wall Street Journal.
