Officials face challenges in providing care to uninsured

The number of adults without medical insurance has continued to rise, and officials across the country are having a hard time keeping up.

Four years ago, officials in Montgomery County, MD, launched a program for the uninsured, promising to provide care to half of the county's estimated 80,000 uninsured residents by 2010, the Washington Post reports.

Two years from the deadline, officials now say they won't be able to meet their goal, despite the opening of three new clinics and a 58 percent increase in the number of people receiving care, according to the article in the Washington Post.

The challenges are common across the country, from California to Massachusetts. Among the problems the country is facing are increasing operating costs and a shortage of healthcare providers.
