Bush’s budget sparks more debate

Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, Kaiser Network, February 8, 2008

President Bush released his 2009 budget, and the healthcare debate is hardly over.

Lawmakers sparred this week over what they called "unrealistic assumptions" on healthcare spending, CQ Today reports.

One report by the Philadelphia Inquirer suggests lawmakers will ignore the President's proposals to cut Medicare and Medicaid spending.

State Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) criticized a plan to cut Medicare reimbursements for physicians and other healthcare providers.

"The Medicare cuts are not realistic," he told Congress Daily. "I urge you to take another look at that, 'cause it's just not gonna happen."

Committee Chair Max Baucus (D-Mont.) told CQ Today, "A realistic budget would reveal the surprising truth that the long-run problem is not an entitlements problem," adding, "It's a healthcare problem."
