An estimated 47 million Americans often forego necessary medicine and medical care. With the dramatic increase in health care costs, the number of uninsured has grown from 43 million in 2006, according to a Reuters report on Yahoo.
The growing problem is a leading topic in the 2008 presidential campaign, but US lawmakers have argued over reform plans for years and state leaders say they are tired of waiting for resolution from Washington.
At least a dozen states are trying to pass significant health care reforms this year.
